ii. The defendant’s advocate

If the defendant has legal representation you can ask the advocate for information about any support needs the representative may be aware of in respect of his or her client. You can also ask the representative whether an Appropriate Adult was requested by the police.

However, it should be borne in mind that defence lawyers do not routinely receive awareness training in mental health, learning disabilities or autism and may not be aware themselves that their client might have particular difficulties.
